Postcards
by Wendy Cope
At first I sent you a postcard
From every city I went to.
Grusse aus Bath, aus Birmingham,
Aus Rotterdam, aus Tel Aviv.
Mit Liebe. Cards from you arrived
In English, with many commas.
Hope, you’re fine and still alive,
Says one from Hong Kong. By that time
We weren’t writing quite as often.
Now we’re nearly nine years away
From the lake and the blue mountains,
And the room with the balcony,
But the heat and light of those days
Can reach this far from time to time.
Your latest was from Senegal,
Mine from Helsinki. I don’t know
If we’ll meet again. Be happy.
If you hear this, send a postcard.

I know I’ve siad this already. I know you know how I feel, but I need to say this again.
She had her chance to to choose you years ago. And she didn’t. She lead you on. She gave to hope. Then she chose him. And in doing so she tore your heart out and stomped on it.
And now she says things are different. She says the marriage is falling apart. That she’s been seeing others. That she wants to see where things could go. She’s giving you hope again. But she still didn’t choose you first. She chose all of these others before she chose you. Now she needs to make sure she can keep stringing you along.
You have made your choice to see her. And I can’t change that. But I do not agree with it. I can’t. I don’t trust her with your heart. Nothing she has done makes me think she is doing anything but using you for convenience. She has nothing better to do, no current fling at the moment, so she is coming here to give you hope again.
I love you. Please be careful. I don’t want her to break you again.

Last November my parents bought me a new bike. A pretty sweet bike. They were every sneeky about it and I was happily surprised. Since then I have gone on a handful of infrequent short rides. Well, on Saturday my sisters, Jenna and Aimee, and I went on a 20 mile ride on the Red Cedar Trail. And at the end of the ride I was still able to bike up the 2 big hills to get back home!
We started from home rode through bustling downtown Menomonie to the trail head. Once on the trail we followed it passed Irvington to Downsville. It was a beautiful day, not too hot or sunny. We rode at a moderate pass enjoying the views or the river to one side and bluffs, hills, and fields to the other. Along with wonderful conversation with each other.
I haven’t been on the trail in many years. Many sites where familiar, some things had changed. We rode my the path I took as kid to get to the trail from Pixie and Dan’s. The hill there isn’t so steep anymore. We rode across the bridge in Irvington, where we would spend summer afternoons “fishing” for tadpoles. We always managed to catch quite a few. many we took home and put in our pond. Most of those became fish food for our gold fish. And a lucky few actually grew into frogs. And then on to Downsville where we walked down to the river when I was in Brownies and let our boat go. Hoping the letters attached to them would be mailed back to us from the far corners of the world.
It was a lovely ride. :)
Yesterday I brought my bike over to Andy’s and we went on a 7 mile ride through the east side of Madison. We mainly followed the path along the Arboretum. We went up many hills and I’m happy to say I made it up every one of them. We passed a house that had free water. There was a small drinking fountain in the front yard and a sign saying walkers, runners, joggers, bikers, pets, etc. are welcome to stop and take a drink. It was quite possibly the best water I’ve ever had.

My car broke today on my drive home from work today. And that was bad. I managed to coax it into a gas station parking lot. I called Andy. He came to help. We discovered that my car was leaking gas like a sieve. That was bad. I start crying.
Random guy walks over and says, “I can fix your car. Right now.” And he does. This is good. And he only charges $50, but he got $60. And it takes under an hour. And this is good.
And then I had a Hawaiian Burger for dinner. And that was yummy.
The End

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded! -Emerson
