Kids are cool

Today for story time I had my kids pick between “A is for America,” which we have been reading this week, and “The Giving Tree.” They picked The Giving Tree. The cool part of this is, even though they were rather squirrelly today, as soon as I started reading the book they sat completely still and where quiet until the end of the story. It was just so neat to see all of them listening so intently to the story. Their eyes were full of imagination and wonder. It was very cool! :)

And after school today I went and picked up my very first paycheck for teaching, also very cool. I felt very adult. :)

I just finished reading this book. It was wonderful. I was full of smiles and giggles while reading it. It is a great book to read for your own enjoyment, and I think it would make a wonderful read aloud book for 3rd and 4th graders. :)

Summer School

Today was my first day teaching summer school. I had four kids show up that were not on my class list, and 6 kids that were on my list didn’t show up. Of the 6 kids that weren’t here today, I’ve been told that 3 will be gone for the first week of class, and 2 may or may not show up at all.

When the principal stopped in I was in the middle of story time. So she chatted with my aide. And left a message for me to call her. When I called she said she was impressed at how organized I was, and how well behaved the kids were. :) And I felt very unprepared today too. . . But I took the compliment.

And now, because it’s after 10pm and I have to get up at 6am, I have to bbe lame and go to bed.

Is this a trend?

So about 2 weeks ago I locked my keys in my car. Just before I had to leave for an interview. Luckily I had taken my purse with me when I got out of the car, so I had my cell phone with me. After some calling around, I found a locksmith. And I called my interview, explained what had happened and said I would be late. After waiting 25 minutes the locksmith showed up, unlocked my car in less than 2 minutes and charged me nearly $40. I was annoyed and greatful all at the same time.

Once I had my keys I ran up to my apartment, which I couldn’t do before because I live in a secure building, and got ready for my interview. When I finally got there, about 30 minutes late, I found out that the secratary had locked her keys in her car the week before. And during my inwerview with the princapal I found out that she had done the same thing before her first interview after graduating college. Both stories made me feel better, and I got the job. :) (More on that later.)

After my interview I went and hung out with Andy. Joyce was there too, for a bit. I told them both what had happened and it was desided that I should get an extra key made. I was all for it. Joyce had other things to do and left for home. Andy and I went to Home Depot, where I got an extra key made. :) Then we went out to eat at a new resturant, City Grill. I really liked City Grill. The food was quite yummy and I had a chocolate martini, which was wonderful. After City Grill, we went to Jess, Rob and Harry’s new house. Andy did some internet stuff for them and I got to read bedtime stories to Harry. When we left we got ice cream. And then it was back to my car and back home for me. So, a day that started with me locking my keys in my car turned out quite lovely. :)

And now today’s story. . .
Today I went up to Wausau to find out where I would be teaching this summer, get my class list, and finish filling out some employment paperwork. Once I was finished with this I was meeting Andy and Endo for lunch.

Well, I got up there with no problem. My principal informed me that I have 21 students, one has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy, one is on a gluten free diet, and one is a behavioral problem. However, because my class size is so large I will have an aide, and the principal is looking into having an aide specifically for the student with behavioral problems. We went over to my classroom, which is one of the local daycares. It looks like a pretty cool room. I’m excited to make it more my own during my time there. (Summer school is a 6 week program.)

I then met the school nurse. I learned how to use an epi-pin, in case there is a peanut incident in my classroom. And we went shopping for “safe” snack. And then I was off to the administrative buliding to finish my paper work. Well, when I got there I was told a tornado warning had just been issued for the next hour and I was welcome to join everyone in the basement. So down I went. After an hour the warning was extended for another hour. However, people were free to leave. After talking to someone from HR and finding out I could finish my paper work on Wednesday, I walked outside and called Andy. We desided that it was safe enough for me to drive the few blocks over to DataWave.

Andy, Endo, and I then went to lunch at Culver’s. We chatted about this and that and watched the sky continue to look stormy. Every now and then Andy’s pager would go off because a server somewhere was freaking out. It was a nice way to track the storms location.

After lunch I got in my car to head home, but first I needed to stop and get gas. I left my purse, with my wallet (where my spare key is) and my keys in the car. I got out of my car. I shut the door. And then I realized that all my door were locked and my keys were IN the car. I was highly annoyed with myself. I went into the gas station told them what had happened and one of the attendents called a locksmith for me. The locksmith came, unlocked my car, I payed him, I paid for gas, I went home.

I’m really hoping that this isn’t a start of a trend for me. I can’t afford to spend $40 every 2 weeks to get my car unlocked. I need to find a place on the outside of my car to hide a key. . .

I’m looking forward to reading this. I read the first 3 in the series back to back. They were wonderful. :)
